SK Films is pleased to announce that filming was completed on location in Mexico for SK’s upcoming release for IMAX® and other Giant Screen theatres worldwide.

EL ROSARIO, MICHOACAN, MEXICO, March 9, 2012: SK Films of Toronto is pleased to announce that filming was completed on location in Mexico this week for Flight of the Butterflies 3D, SK’s upcoming release for IMAX® and other Giant Screen theatres worldwide. Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited the set on the last day of filming in the monarch butterfly sanctuary at El Rosario in the State of Michoacan, his home State. His Government and the States of Michoacan and Mexico, are supporting the production and promotion of the film.

This epic natural history story of the monarch butterfly migration was filmed over a year-long period to match the annual migration cycle of the monarchs from Canada, down the U.S. to the remote volcanic mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Mexico and back – the longest insect migration on earth. Shot on location in Toronto, the U.S. and in Mexico, including in the monarch butterfly sanctuaries that were discovered in 1975, our extensive 3D crew was granted permission to film in these now protected and ecologically delicate mountain areas – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The natural history story is interwoven with the scientific detective story of Dr. Fred Urquhart, spanning 80 years from Fred as a curious young boy wondering where the monarchs went each year, to his looking back as an older man on his scientific life of discovery. In terms of period authenticity, our research team and award winning art department undertook meticulous planning in spanning the 80-year time period. The Mexican scenes include local villagers who participated in the Day of the Dead celebration in an existing graveyard, recreated in detail as it was in 1974. Our close-up/macro photography work was undertaken in collaboration with Oscar winner Peter Parks. Canadian icon and revered actor Gordon Pinsent plays Dr. Urquhart and his wife Norah is played by distinguished Canadian actress Patricia Phillips. Shaun Benson plays the dynamic and adventurous Texan, Ken Brugger and his new Mexican bride, Catalina Aguado Brugger is played by rising Mexican star Stephanie Sigman.

It is impossible to describe what it is like to see hundreds of millions of butterflies swirling and floating about, millions more roosting on every available tree trunk and drooping branch in these enchanted forests. There is complete silence except for the sound of millions of fluttering wings. The air is rich with the fresh

scent of the ancient oyamel fir trees. As our actors universally state in the Behind The Scenes interviews about their experience being in this magical place, they were overwhelmed and felt apart of something both spiritual and scientific. The entire cast and crew all share the desire to protect the migratory routes and sanctuaries of these magnificent creatures – a desire shared by the Mexican Federal and State Governments.

The film is an international co-production headed by veteran 3D producer Jonathan Barker of SK Films, with the U.K.’s Mike Slee (SK’s previous release, Bugs 3D!) directing and writing, along with co-writer Wendy MacKeigan. Mike Slee and Rafael Cuervo are the U.K. and Mexican co-producers.

Many of the words of Dr. Urquhart in the film are from the famous 1976 National Geographic article published shortly after the discovery, from his subsequent book and from extensive radio interviews. The only surviving member of the discovery team, Catalina Aguado Trail, has provided the team with rich and detailed information about her time with the Urquharts and her search with Ken, as well as guidance to the actress portraying her.

The project has major financial support from the National Science Foundation, with our extensive Educational Outreach Program being created by our education partner The Maryland Science Center with the participation of The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. The world’s top monarch butterfly experts, including Dr. Chip Taylor, Dr. Karen Oberhauser and Dr. Lincoln Brower, are serving as our scientific advisors.

Additional support has come from two of the most important companies in Mexico – Coca-Cola FEMSA, and Grupo Bimbo (the world’s largest baked goods company).

It is important to the production team and the film’s funders that a significant portion of the profits go towards monarch butterfly conservation through Mexico’s most significant conservation organization, Fondo Mexicano para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza.

Flight of the Butterflies will premiere in September of 2012. Additional release details will follow.

“Scenes from Flight of the Butterflies 3D, and the work of Director of Photography Simon de Glanville, are quite literally eye-popping and jaw-dropping.”

From <a title="MediaCaster Magazine" href="http://www.mediacastermagazine.com/news/butterflies-and-first-glasses-free-3d-tablets-at-advertising-week/1000858762/>Media Caster Magazine”>Media Caster Magazine

Top directors like James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese are among those making a big impact by filming in 3D.

Based on some preview clips from an upcoming IMAX 3D film, shared with attendees at the Advertising Week conference in Toronto, better add the name Jonathan Barker, too.

With almost 20 years experience at SK Films in Toronto, producing and distributing 2D and 3D content , Barker’s newest IMAX 3D production follows the flight of the Monarch butterfly with a dramatic realism and visual impact rarely achieved on the big screen.

Scenes from Flight of the Butterflies 3D, and the work of Director of Photography Simon de Glanville, are quite literally eye-popping and jaw-dropping.

And even beyond the impact of IMAX, Barker says SK Films will be shooting expanded television versions of its Giant Screen/IMAX films, as well as reviewing with the broadcasters the possibility of shooting those television documentaries in 3D, as well including material for online 3D.

But what do butterflies mean to the advertising community?

Geneva Film Co. founder and director James Stewart explored the next dimension of advertising, and how it can have an impact far beyond its immediate or initial surroundings (just the philosopher’s ‘Butterfly Effect’).

He did so partly by sharing the 3D IMAX clip (and other 3D content, including some of his own productions) on screen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and also by describing and detailing the new 3D platforms, associated costs, and production implications for creative storytelling, be it in consumer content, advertising and promotion, full length documentaries or educational content.

He also passed around one of the first glasses free 3D tablets in Canada (in advance of its hitting the market, although several will by this summer) so attendees could see 3D content up close, as well.

Glasses-free 3D phones, tablets, notebook computers, desktop PCs and home TVs are a new and exciting content delivery channel for advertisers, Stewart reinforced, especially when one considers the stunning 15-20 per cent higher retention rates over traditional 2D spots.

In this and other industry sessions, Stewart shows solid research that the use of 3D in advertising yields eye-popping returns in memory retention, with audiences exhibiting 92 per cent total recall of a 3D ad.

What’s more, the research shows, 68 per cent of that number show a higher likelihood of following through with a purchase of the product advertised – a significant increase over the same commercial in 2D.

Although he has worked on 3D commercials, PSAs and promos produced for theatrical release, he’s always known that mobile 3D would play a huge role in building up the need and opportunity for 3D content.

“The next frontier for 3D advertising is the mobile device. From a 3D YouTube channel, to movie trailers, to downloadable content and games – the opportunities for advertisers to engage an audience in new ways is virtually limitless and incredibly viral,” he says.

Since 2000, Stewart has produced and directed leading-edge spots for brands such as Toyota, Ford, Acura, Hyundai, TD Canada Trust, CIBC, Panasonic, Xerox and Bayer among others. Through his production company, Geneva Film Co., he has now has produced over 25 projects in digital 3D, including cinema commercials, concerts, stop-motion and CG animation.

Recent projects include 3D cinema commercials for Lexus LFA, Sprint and JCPenney; live 3D concerts films of the Montreux Jazz Festival and Kylie Minogue; The Human Eye with Cornell University; the stop-motion 3D film Foxed!; Ontario 4D for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics; and Werner Herzog’s acclaimed Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D.

He has also worked with the Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake and the Olsen Twins.

Advertising Week, spearheaded by The Institute of Communications Agencies (ICA), is one of Canada’s biggest advertising industry gatherings. Stewart is joined on the AdWeek podium by industry experts from Facebook, Ipsos Reid, Marketing Magazine, Yahoo! Canada, Google Mobile Ads and Bruce Mau Design, among others.

The Institute of Communication Agencies or the ICA is the professional business association that represents Canada’s communication and advertising agencies. The ICA’s mission is to champion commercial creativity, amplify the industry’s economic impact, and to embrace and drive change. As such, the ICA promotes thought leadership, higher standards and best practices. It serves as the largest source of information, advice, education and training for Canada’s communication and advertising industry. ICA’s member agencies and subsidiaries account for over 75% of all national advertising in Canada, with an economic impact worth more than $19 billion annually.

THE WATER BROTHERS TV SERIES PREMIERES MARCH 19, 2012

TORONTO, JANUARY 26, 2012: Season 1 of The Water Brothers, an original six part doc series from SK Films, premieres on TVO at 7PM (EST) on March 19th, which marks Canada Water Week and UN World Water Day on March 22nd. The series will also be available for streaming nationally at tvo.org. Season 2 has already been ordered by TVO.

Audiences will join the charismatic and adventurous brothers – Tyler and Alex Mifflin – as they travel the world exploring the challenges facing water, earth’s most precious resource. The Water Brothers are passionate and bring a fresh perspective to one of the most compelling contemporary subjects of our time. “We are at an amazing time in human history, where we can all initiate change in our daily lives, on a local level, to solve global problems and we hope through this series we can shed some light on the state of what’s really happening with water issues around the world,” says Co-host Tyler.

The series is unique as the brothers prove that you can still have some fun, enjoy local cultures, while investigating serious subjects.

Season 1 includes stunning footage and compelling stories as the Brothers explore the massive coral reef system of Central America and Mexico (“Reefer Madness“), the potential impact of dams on the Mekong River including Cambodia and Vietnam (“Valley of the Damned“), the Arctic (“The Big Thaw“), the gigantic, engineered water systems of California (“Water in All the Wrong Places“), the threat to the Great Lakes from the invasive Asian Carp (“Carpageddon“) and our obsession with bottled water (“Bottlegate“).

The two brothers in their twenties – one a film production graduate from UBC (Tyler) and the other an environmental/international studies graduate from Dalhousie (Alex) – are making this series, largely on their own. Alex is researching, writing, co-hosting and is the interviewer of world-leading water experts. Tyler is co-hosting, directing, co-producing and shooting.

Word about The Water Brothers is spreading and they already have a very strong and growing following. They are frequently asked to host and speak at water and conservation related events and this past fall, they made a presentation at the TEDx Youth@Toronto conference and excerpts from the series were selected for inclusion in the Youth Climate Report during the UN’s Convention on Climate Change (COP17) in Durban, South Africa.

As an extension of their goals and passion, The Water Brothers are launching QUENCH – a free mobile app which will instantly connect users to the nearest water fountain or official water bottle re-fill location, in stores, restaurants, etc. in the Greater Toronto area. QUENCH is brought to you by The Water Brothers, the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund and TVO. “QUENCH provides a convenient choice for consumers. Hopefully it will help reduce the impact of the hundreds of millions of plastic water bottles discarded in Canadian landfills each year” says Alex Mifflin.

SK CEO Jonathan Barker and Executive Vice-President Wendy MacKeigan are producing The Water Brothers series.
